History & Architecture of Saigon Central Post Office

The Ho Chi Minh City Post Office is an ancient architectural work built by the French in 1886-1891, located at the Cong Xa Paris Square, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. During more than a century of existence and through many regimes, the work still retains its function as a post office.

Located next to Notre Dame Cathedral, the Post Office is beautiful architecture, in harmony with the urban landscape, and an attractive tourist destination for tourists coming to Ho Chi Minh City.

The post office of Ho Chi Minh City has a contemporary Western Beaux-Arts architectural style combined with oriental decorations, designed by architect Villedieu and his assistant Foulhoux.

The building has a sophisticatedly decorated facade with delicate details. Above the main gate facing the square, there is a round clock and records the year of construction: 1886-1891.

Outside, the front of the building is decorated in rectangular boxes, on which the inventors of the telegraph and electricity industries are registered. Above and below the registration box is covered with delicate flower and leaf relief.

The main hall interior space of the building is impressive with rolling arches and roof light windows. This is the place where customers deal with postal service counters; Currently, this is also a place to sell souvenirs for tourism.

In the middle of this space, there are rows of tables for people to sit and write letters.

The post office still maintains public telephone cabins – a hallmark of a time. Currently, a number of cabins are converted into rooms for ATMs.

Now few people come to post offices to send mail and mobile phones are dominant, but the Ho Chi Minh City Post Office is always crowded with tourists to visit and buy souvenirs.

With beautiful space and architecture, the City Post Office is an attractive wedding photography spot for many couples. Visitors here cannot forget to take souvenir photos in front of this wonderful architecture.
